NEW YORK – The most Earth-shattering event in Brazil this weekend took place in New York, where singer Ivete Sangalo played a sold out show at Madison Square Garden. Too bad, few Americans even noticed.

A superstar in her native Brazil, where she can pack a 70,000-capacity soccer stadium and commands crowds of millions during Carnaval, Sangalo kept the almost-entirely-Brazilian audience on its feet over the course of three hours and five costume changes.

Dancing frenetically, the crowd of 14,500 sang along with every word of her samba-inflected dance pop songs like "Festa" (Party) and "Acelere" (Accelerate).

"I just want you to be proud of me, and I want you to be proud <url=http://www.zumbapopular.com/>zumba</url> of the show I brought here," Sangalo said from the top of a massive, thrusting stage pulsing with lights and video — designed by the man responsible for this year's Super Bowl halftime show, Bruce Rodgers.

In Brazil, Sangalo's show was touted as her first step toward <url=http://www.laptopbatterydell.com/products/Dell-Inspiron-1721-7800mAh.htm>Dell Inspiron 1721 battery</url> conquering the U.S., placing her in a pantheon with the likes of Madonna, the Rolling Stones, Beyonce and U2.

But a 100-foot-high banner that hung outside the Garden for <url=http://www.mediumondvd.com/>medium dvd</url> weeks advertising the show still required the helpful caption explaining Sangalo is "A Brazilian Star."

At a pre-concert news conference, the statuesque brunette said the relative anonymity didn't faze her.

"When I started in Brazil, I was also unknown, and Brazil is a gigantic place with <url=http://www.originallaptopbatteryshop.com/products/Lenovo-42T4593-Laptop-Battery.htm>42T4593 Battery</url> lots of talent," the husky-voiced singer explained. "I haven't come here with the pretension of being well known, but what I've come do to here, I've come to do right."

As a Portuguese speaker, Sangalo may have had her <url=http://www.twoandahalfmendvdshop.com/>two and a half men dvd</url> work cut out for her, but promoters say selling out the Garden is a real accomplishment.

The only other Brazilian to headline a show at the Garden, singer Roberto Carlos, did so by reaching out to Latin audiences and singing in Spanish.

The closest comparison might be the Korean pop singer Rain, who <url=http://www.originallaptopbatteryshop.com/products/Lenovo-42T4680-Laptop-Battery.htm>42T4680 Battery</url> sold out two nights at the smaller Madison Square Garden theater, which seats 4,000, in 2006.

Concert promoter John Scher said people have been calling him to ask who Sangalo is.

"I don't think there's been anything quite like this. There are Latin (Spanish speaking) artists who can sell <url=http://www.laptopbatterydell.com/products/Dell-Inspiron-510m-4400mAh.htm>Dell Inspiron 510m battery</url> out the Garden, but this is a pretty unique situation really," Scher said. "There's a lot of interest in the music industry, if not with the public."

But her brand of Carnaval-inspired dance-pop, known <url=http://www.friendsdvdseason.com/>friends dvd</url> as axe (pronounced ah-SHAY'), isn't what U.S. listeners usually think of as Brazilian music, and her audience tends to be concentrated among teenagers and twenty-somethings looking for a chance to hook up.

Her lyrics express the irrepressible optimism of youth, and her sound is a world away from the <url=http://www.laptopbatterydell.com/products/Dell-Inspiron-600M-Laptop-Battery.htm>Dell Inspiron 600m battery</url> cool, cerebral bossa nova of Joao Gilberto or the smooth sounds of Caetano Veloso and Marisa Monte, all of whom are better known in the United States, even if Sangalo outsells them all at home.

As many as 5,000 fans had been <url=http://www.thegoldengirlsdvd.com/>the golden girls dvd</url> expected to fly in from Brazil for the show, organizers say.

So despite all the conquering America swagger, Sangalo's intent is actually something entirely different: The <url=http://www.originallaptopbatteryshop.com/products/Lenovo-42T4684-Laptop-Battery.htm>42T4684 Battery</url> Garden show was mainly intended to serve as a backdrop for her new DVD and a TV special to be broadcast in Brazil in December.

"They want a packed house and want to say 'we've sold out Madison Square Garden' and they've probably achieved that through various other means than from straight ahead ticket sales,'" says Gene de Souza, development director of the nonprofit Rhythm Foundation, who promoted Sangalo's Miami show.

In Miami, with a larger Brazilian population, Sangalo sold only 6,500 of <url=http://www.laptopbatterydell.com/products/Dell-Inspiron-6000-Laptop-Battery.htm>Dell Inspiron 6000 battery</url> the 7,000 seats put up for sale, de Souza said, in an arena where Britney Spears was able to pack in 18,500 fans.

She also reached out to the Spanish-speaking audiences, performing duets with Colombian <url=http://www.laptopbatterydell.com/products/Dell-Inspiron-6400-4400mAh.htm>Dell Inspiron 6400 battery</url> superstar Juanes and Argentina's Diego Torres, but the warmest applause was reserved for Brazilian guests like Seu Jorge and fellow axe star Netinho, who appeared, briefly transforming the 25-minute-long encore into a mini-version of Carnaval.

"I didn't come with the objective to transforming anything or parting the waters for Brazilian music or anything like that," Sangalo said before the show. "I am a popular singer for the masses, and I will continue to be one, and this is my greatest pleasure."

WASHINGTON – John Boehner could walk down most American streets without turning a head.

But the perpetually tanned, chain-smoking Ohioan might be the next House speaker and a huge force in national politics, trying to manage an increasingly libertarian-leaning Republican caucus while leading the opposition to President Barack Obama's policies.

For those who know Boehner (pronounced BAY'-nur), the question is which version of the House Republican leader will emerge as speaker if the GOP takes at least 40 seats from Democrats in November.

Will it be the policy-minded lawmaker who sometimes shows bipartisan tendencies, such as when he worked with the late Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., on major education bills?

Or will it be the fiery partisan of recent months who <url=http://www.laptopbatterydell.com/products/Dell-G5260-6600mAh.htm>G5260</url> shouted "hell no" to Obama's health care bill and who threw the Democrats' massive economic stimulus bill to the House floor in a theatrical rebuke?

Boehner left little doubt that the president and other Democrats will face fierce resistance <url=http://www.originallaptopbatteryshop.com/products/HP-HSTNN-IB68-Laptop-Battery.htm>HSTNN-IB68 Battery</url> in the House if he is speaker, starting with a push to dismantle Obama's hard-fought health care law.

"We're going to do everything we can to prevent this law from being implemented, and I mean everything," Boehner said in a recent interview. "I think it will ruin health care and bankrupt the country."

In truth, Obama's veto powers will make it virtually impossible to repeal the law. Still, Boehner <url=http://www.thecloserondvd.com/>the closer dvd</url> said, he would use every parliamentary and appropriations trick available, including making sure "they don't get the funds to hire employees to implement the law."

Still, he knows he won't become a household name overnight. His bigger challenge looms on his right. Restless and uncompromisingly conservative Republicans probably will expand their ranks after tea party loyalists win some races Nov. 2.

Boehner already has a somewhat wary alliance with several younger and more dogmatic <url=http://www.laptopbatterydell.com/products/Dell-Inspiron-1300-Laptop-Battery.htm>Dell Inspiron 1300 battery</url> GOP members. They include Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia, the party's second-ranking House leader.

Cantor and two colleagues — Reps. There's one glaring omission in the hoopla over the book: any reference to Boehner.

Republicans say there's little chance of a coup attempt if the GOP takes control of the House. But <url=http://www.maxheadroomdvdseries.com/>max headroom dvd</url> expectations have soared so high that every leadership post, including Cantor's, could be in play if they fall short.

House members elect their respective party leaders. Boehner scoffs at suggestions that the "young guns" might undermine his leadership.

He predicts partisan gridlock, but he said Boehner can effectively lead his party and its young cadre of firebreathers.

On the surface, Boehner is a Washington throwback. He loves golf and cocktails. He is genial and <url=http://www.originallaptopbatteryshop.com/products/Lenovo-51J0399-Laptop-Battery.htm>51J0399 Battery</url> courteous to almost everyone, including reporters and Democratic staffers. He constantly smokes Barclay cigarettes, even during meetings in his Capitol office. And he maintains a remarkably deep tan, which Obama and others have gently mocked.

The second of 12 children in a Catholic family from Cincinnati, Boehner played high school football and helped at his father's bar <url=http://www.enthusiasmdvd.com/>curb your enthusiasm dvd</url> and restaurant. He worked his way through college, sometimes as a janitor, graduating from Xavier University at age 27. He rose to the top of a plastics distribution company, and entered Republican politics in his hometown.

While clearly a conservative, Boehner has sometimes worked with Democrats to enact major legislation. The episode might suggest that Boehner is a bit less rigidly partisan than<url=http://www.laptopbatterydell.com/products/Dell-Inspiron-1525-6600mAh.htm>Dell Inspiron 1525 battery</url> some of his fellow GOP leaders. Most House Republicans opposed the bailout bill that he backed.

Hastert, as speaker, had a "majority of the majority" rule. "All members should have a role in the legislative process," Boehner said.

Even a whiff of bipartisan cooperation angers some tea party supporters, and Boehner might <url=http://www.originallaptopbatteryshop.com/products/Lenovo-42T4589-Laptop-Battery.htm>42T4589 Battery</url> clash with the newest and most ideological House Republicans. But in other respects, they might be kindred souls.

Boehner entered the House in 1991 as a windows-rattling reformer. He joined <url=http://www.zumbaondvd.com/>zumba</url> the "Gang of Seven" that insisted on naming all 355 members with overdrafts at the House Bank, a damaging scandal.

And he has long opposed earmark spending, which some lawmakers use to steer pet projects to their districts. It's a favorite conservative target this year.

Boehner was a key ally of Rep. Boehner may lack Gingrich's revolutionary zeal and intellectual bent, Kingston said, but he has a steadier grasp of intramural politics.

"He'd be better able to manage that new, hard-energy reform crowd than Newt," Kingston said, adding that the House "is a political body, not an ideological body."

BOGOTA, Colombia – Edward Nino Hernandez is in many ways a typical 24-year-old Colombian male. He loves to dance reggaeton, dreams of owning a car — preferably a Mercedes_ and wants to see the world.

Top on his list of people he would like to meet are Jackie Chan, Sylvester Stallone and former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe.

What sets Nino (pronounced NEE-nyoh) apart is his size.

He is slightly taller than a piece of carry-on luggage and weighs just 22 pounds (10 kilograms).

Nino has just been officially certified as the <url=http://www.gossipgirldvds.com/>gossip girl dvd</url> world's shortest living man by Guinness World Records, measuring 27 inches (70 centimeters).

"He hasn't grown since he was 2 years old," his mother, Noemi Hernandez, said of the oldest of her five living children.

The previous titleholder was He Pingping of China, who was 1.5 inches (4 centimeters) taller and died March 13. The Guinness people discovered Nino afterward.

They say Nino's reign is not likely to last long, however.

Khagendra Thapa Magar of Nepal is expected to take over after he turns 18 on <url=http://www.laptopbatterydell.com/products/Dell-Y9943-4400mAh.htm>Y9943</url> Oct. 14. He measures about 22 inches (56 centimeters) and is currently recognized by Guinness as the shortest living teen.

Doctors never could explain why Nino is so small, his parents say.

"They never gave us a diagnosis," his mother, Noemi Hernandez, said during an interview <url=http://www.originallaptopbatteryshop.com/products/advent-batel80l6-battery.htm>advent batel80l6 battery</url> in the family's sparely furnished apartment in Bosa, a mostly poor district of southern Bogota.

Hernandez, 43, said Nino weighed just 3.3 pounds (1.5 kilograms) at birth and was 15 inches (38 centimeters) long.

She said doctors at the National University studied <url=http://www.bbcdvdshop.com/>bbc dvd</url> him until he was 3, then lost interest. She and her husband, a security guard, lost a daughter who was similarly small in 1992 when she was about to complete a year of life.

The couple's youngest child, 11-year-old Miguel Angel, stands 37 inches (93 centimeters) tall and has facial features similar to Nino. The other three boys are of normal height and appearance.

"I feel happy because I'm unique," Nino said <url=http://www.laptopbatterydell.com/products/Dell-RN873-6600mAh.htm>RN873</url> in an interview Friday with The Associated Press.

He does, however, have his problems: cataracts in both of his eyes that blur his vision and, says his mother, require urgent surgery that the family can't afford.

"He doesn't see well. He isn't able to read," she said.

Nino had to repeat several years of school before dropping <url=http://www.tudorsdvd.com/>the tudors dvd</url> out in the eighth grade. But he's very sociable, loves to travel — though he hasn't been outside Colombia — and likes to play dominoes and checkers.

"He only gets depressed when he's shut in at home," his mother said.

Leafing through an advance copy of the Guinness World Records 2011 edition, which <url=http://www.laptopbatterydell.com/products/Dell-FK890-7800mAh.htm>FK890</url> launches Sept. 15 in the United States and the next day internationally, Hernandez shows Nino a picture of the world's smallest woman, who is from India.

He's not interested in the least.

Nino says he already has a girlfriend. She's 18, is named Fanny and measures just under 5 feet (1.5 meters), he says.

Nino has earned some cash dancing at department stores and <url=http://www.originallaptopbatteryshop.com/products/HP-6730B-Battery.htm>HP 6730B Battery</url> is now acting in a film in which he plays — What else? This is Colombia — a pint-sized drug thug.

In his big scene, Nino gets into a shootout.

But being the world's smallest man does have its drawbacks.

"It bothers me that people are (always) touching me and picking me up," he said.

Users of the website and its CEO grouse that the Internet is still full of sites where people can find prostitutes. As for the massive online classifieds site itself, many personal ads, which remain on the site, appear to be thinly veiled solicitations of sex for sale.

State attorneys general had pressed Craigslist to do more to block potentially illegal ads promoting prostitution, and hailed the company's decision to take down its adult services section on Saturday. But like other illegal online activities targeted with prosecution or lawsuits, including gambling, child pornography and unauthorized music downloads, shutting down one outlet simply sends many users running to others.

Whenever companies start hiring freely again, job-seekers with specialized skills and education will have plenty of good opportunities. Others will face a choice: Take a job with low pay — or none at all.

Job creation will likely remain weak for months or even years. But once employers do step up hiring, some economists expect job openings to fall mainly into two categories of roughly equal numbers:

• Professional fields with higher pay. Think lawyers, research scientists and software engineers.

• Lower-skill and lower-paying jobs, like home health care aides and store clerks.

And those in between? Their outlook is bleaker. Economists foresee fewer moderately paid factory supervisors, postal workers and office administrators.

That's the sobering message American workers face as they celebrate Labor Day at a <url=http://www.laptopbatterydell.com/products/Dell-75UYF-Laptop-Battery.htm>75UYF</url> time of high unemployment, scant hiring and a widespread loss of job security. Not until 2014 or later is the nation expected to have regained all, or nearly all, the 8.4 million jobs lost to the recession. Millions of lost jobs in real estate, for example, aren't likely to be restored this decade, if ever.

On Friday, the government said the August unemployment rate <url=http://www.originallaptopbatteryshop.com/products/Dell-7FJ92-Laptop-Battery.htm>7FJ92 Battery</url> ticked up to 9.6 percent. Not enough jobs were created to absorb the growing number of people seeking work. The unemployment rate has exceeded 9 percent for 16 months, the longest such stretch in nearly 30 years.

The crisis poses a threat to President Barack Obama and Democrats in Congress, whose hold on <url=http://www.startrekvoyagerdvd.com/>star trek voyager dvd</url> the House and Senate appears to be at increasing risk because of voter discontent.

Even when the job market picks up, many people will be left behind. The threat stems, in part, from the economy's continuing shift from one driven by manufacturing to one fueled by service industries.

Pay for future service-sector jobs will tend to vary from very high to very low. At the same time, the number of <url=http://www.originallaptopbatteryshop.com/products/Dell-04D3C-Laptop-Battery.htm>04D3C Battery</url> middle-income service-sector jobs will shrink, according to government projections. Any job that can be automated or outsourced overseas is likely to continue to decline.

The service sector's growth could also magnify the nation's income inequality, with more people either affluent or financially squeezed. The nation <url=http://www.csidvdseries.com/>csi dvd</url> isn't educating enough people for the higher-skilled service-sector jobs of the future, economists warn.

"There will be jobs," says Lawrence Katz, a Harvard economist. "The big question is what they are <url=http://www.laptopbatterydell.com/products/Dell-8N544-Laptop-Battery.htm>8N544</url> going to pay, and what kind of lives they will allow people to lead? This will be a big issue for how broad a middle class we are going to have."

On one point there's broad agreement: Of 8 million-plus jobs lost to the recession — in fields like manufacturing, real estate and financial services — many, perhaps most, aren't coming back.

In their place will be jobs in health care, information technology and statistical analysis. Some of the <url=http://www.originallaptopbatteryshop.com/products/Dell-4JK6R-Laptop-Battery.htm>4JK6R Battery</url> new positions will require complex skills or higher education. Others won't — but they won't pay very much, either.

"Our occupational structure is really becoming bifurcated," says Richard Florida, a <url=http://www.dexterseason.com/>dexter dvd</url> professor at University of Toronto. "We're becoming more of a divided nation by the work we do."

By 2018, the government forecasts a net total of 15.3 million new jobs. If that proves true, unemployment would drop far closer to a historical norm of 5 percent.

Nearly all the new jobs will be in the service sector, the Labor Department says. The nation's 78 million <url=http://www.laptopbatterydell.com/products/Dell-C1295-4400mAh.htm>C1295</url> baby boomers will need more health care services as they age, for example. Demand for medical jobs will rise. And innovations in high technology and alternative energy are likely to spur growth in occupations that don't yet exist.

Hiring can't come fast enough for the 14.9 million unemployed Americans. Counting part-time employees who would prefer full-time jobs, plus out-of-work people who have stopped looking for jobs, the number of "underemployed" is 26.2 million.

Manufacturing has shed 2 million jobs since the recession began. Construction has lost 1.9 million, financial services 651,000.

But the biggest factor has been the bust in real estate. The vanished jobs range from <url=http://www.originallaptopbatteryshop.com/products/Dell-312-0997-Laptop-Battery.htm>312-0997 Battery</url> construction workers and furniture makers to loan officers, appraisers and material suppliers. Moody's Analytics estimates the total number of housing-related jobs lost at 2.4 million. When you include commercial real estate, the number is far higher.

One of them is Martha Escobar, who last month lost her $13.50-an-hour job cleaning an office tower owned by JPMorgan Chase & Co. in <url=http://www.dexterseason5dvd.com/>dexter dvd</url> Century City, Calif. She was one of 16 janitors, mostly single mothers, who lost jobs as part of the real estate crunch that's squeezed landlords.

Some of them traveled to New York on Thursday to try to pressure JPMorgan to get its cleaning <url=http://www.laptopbatterydell.com/products/Dell-NF343-6600mAh.htm>NF343</url> contractor to take them back, given that the bank earned $8.1 billion during the first half of this year.

"I don't know what I am going to do if I can't get my job back," Escobar, 41, said.

JPMorgan Chase spokesman Gary Kishner said the bank has no say over the layoffs, which he said are handled by the building's cleaning contractor.

On top of real estate-related job losses, manufacturing is likely to keep shedding jobs, sending <url=http://www.originallaptopbatteryshop.com/products/Asus-916C4230F-Laptop-Battery.htm>916c4230f Battery</url> lower-skilled work overseas. Millions who worked in those fields will need to find jobs in higher-skilled or lower-paying occupations.

"The big fear is the country is simply not preparing workers for the kind of skills that the country is going to need," says Gautam Godhwani, CEO of SimplyHired.com, which tracks job listings.

Sectors likely to grow fastest, according <url=http://www.madmendvd.com/>mad men dvd</url> to economists and government projections, are:

• HEALTH CARE

The sector is expected to be the leading job generator, adding 4 million by 2018, according <url=http://www.trueblooddvds.com/>true blood dvd</url> to Labor Department data. An aging population requires more doctors and nurses, physical therapists, home health aides and pharmacists.

Many of these jobs will pay well. Physical therapists averaged about $76,000 last year, according to the department's data. Others pay far less. Home health care aides earned an average of just $21,600.

Home health care and personal care aides are expected to <url=http://www.originallaptopbatteryshop.com/products/Asus-SQU-528-Laptop-Battery.htm>SQU-528 Battery</url> add about 900,000 jobs by 2018 — 50 percent more than in 2008.

Jennifer Gamboa of Body Dynamics Inc., an Arlington, Va.-based physical therapy firm, says the drive to reduce health care costs should benefit her profession, which can treat pain less expensively than surgery. Gamboa plans to add two employees in the next year.

• INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: Technology could be an economic elixir as computers and <url=http://www.laptopbatterydell.com/products/Dell-D5318-4400mAh.htm>D5318</url> online networks expand ways to automate services, distribute media and communicate.

Companies will need people to build and secure those networks. That should boost the number of programmers, network administrators and security specialists by 45 percent to 2.1 million by 2018, the government forecasts. Most of these jobs will provide above-average pay.

Technology pay averaged $84,400 in 2008 — nearly double the average private-sector pay of <url=http://www.originallaptopbatteryshop.com/products/Asus-SQU-503-Laptop-Battery.htm>SQU-503 Battery</url> $45,400, according to an analysis of the most recent full-year data by the TechAmerica Foundation, a research group.

• NEW INDUSTRIES: Deepak Advani, an IBM executive, has a title he <url=http://www.miamiviceondvd.com/>miami vice dvd</url> says didn't exist five years ago: "Vice president of predictive analytics."

Companies and government agencies have amassed data on behavior ranging from shopping habits to criminal activity. Predictive <url=http://www.miamivicedvdboxset.com/>miami vice dvd</url> analytics is the art of determining what to do with that data. How should workers' time be deployed? How best to target customers? Such jobs could grow 20 percent by 2018, the government predicts.

Still, economists say more will be needed to boost job growth. The answer may be some technological breakthrough akin to the personal computer or the Internet.

"Most big booms come from a particular sector that moves the <url=http://www.laptopbatterydell.com/products/Dell-U4873-6600mAh.htm>U4873</url> rest of the economy," said Richard Freeman, a Harvard labor economist.

Technology spurred job growth after the 1982 and 1991 recessions. The PC became revolutionary in the early 1980s. Internet use exploded after the Mosaic Web <url=http://www.originallaptopbatteryshop.com/products/Asus-advent-7093-battery.htm>advent 7093 battery</url> browser was introduced in 1994. Housing eventually lifted employment after the 2001 dot-com bust.

"There's a lack of clarity on what the next big thing is going to be this time," said David Card, an economics professor at the University of California.

Until there is, many people will have to lower expectations and living standards as they enter fields with less pay and less job stability, said Dan Finnigan, CEO of online employment service Jobvite.

"People who are unemployed have to embrace this future that they are going to have many jobs," he said. "We will always be working on the next gig."
